DRIVING ELECTRIFICATION AND CARBON NEUTRALITY WITH e-POWER

  • Nissan targets to achieve carbon neutrality across company’s operations and the life cycle of its products by 2050
  • Twin-interconnected pillars of BEV and e-POWER to drive electrification
  • Life cycle CO² output of an e-POWER model is 20% less than ICE equivalent

KUALA LUMPUR, 28 October 2024 – Climate change is at the heart of the transformation of the automotive industry. As manufacturers strive to reduce greenhouse emissions, the road to carbon neutrality is proving to be anything but a straight line, given the diverse and far-reaching challenges posed by different markets.

While the acceptance of alternative energy vehicles, particularly electrified models, has been strong in certain regions. As the world’s first mass producer of BEVs since 2010 with over a million units in sales to date, Nissan has a clear vision on how to navigate this transformational period.

The role of e-POWER in a balanced portfolio

As set out in the The Arc Business Plan, Nissan targets volume growth through a tailored regional strategy in preparation for the transition to BEV, leveraging on a balanced portfolio of ICE, hybrid and BEV models, with a measured increase of new electrified options in the model mix.

Every new Nissan model to be introduced in key markets by the early 2030s will be electrified, this will be spearheaded by the twin-interconnected pillars of electrification at Nissan – a growing range of new BEVs to cover more segments, alongside an expanding line-up of e-POWER models to drive transformation. Additionally, powertrain integration and modularisation between BEV and e-POWER models will result in cost parity with ICE-powered models in the near future.

Achieving life cycle CO² reduction through e-POWER

Nissan conducts life cycle assessment (LCA) to quantitatively evaluate environmental impact, not only during vehicle use, but at all stages, including raw material extraction, manufacturing, transport as well as end-of-life vehicle recycling.

Compared to their petrol-powered counterparts, e-POWER models such as the Kicks e-POWER emits less life cycle CO² output, courtesy of its second-generation e-POWER system which not only offers a more responsive and refined performance, but also alower environmental impact.

As the internal combustion engine of an e-POWER system only has an energy-generating role and operates under fixed conditions, it is able to consistently achieve a high level of thermal efficiency which improves overall fuel efficiency while reducing tailpipe emissions and CO² output.

In the on-going development of next generation Nissan e-POWER systems, a global milestone in engine thermal efficiency was achieved during testing – a technological breakthrough with the potential to markedly improve fuel efficiency and to further reduce CO² outputs of forthcoming e-POWER systems. Nissan is fully committed to accelerating innovation in electrification technologies such as e-POWER as markets transition to BEVs.

About e-POWER in Malaysia

The e-POWER drive system is a technology unique to Nissan – it is 100% electric motor-driven utilising a petrol engine to produce energy to charge its Li-ion battery pack and to power an electric motor to drive the wheels. It offers instant torque and responsive performance just like an EV, but without range anxiety and the need to plug in and charge. Compared to an ICE-powered vehicle, the e-POWER system has lower tailpipe emissions and running costs, it utilises regenerative braking to reclaim energy and offers single-pedal driving. NISSAN e-POWER: TECHNOLOGY THAT TRANSCENDS AWARDS AND ACCOLADES

  • Innovative e-POWER system received numerous technological awards soon after its debut in Japan
  • Japan COTY 2021-2022 awarded to the Nissan Note powered by the second-generation e-POWER system
  • More than 1.2 million units of e-POWER vehicles in cumulative global sales

KUALA LUMPUR, 9 October 2024 – Developed entirely in-house, e-POWER has become a key pillar alongside battery electric vehicles in driving electrification for Nissan. Since making its debut in the Japanese market in 2016, the proprietary drive system has won over customers, critics and industry experts with the unique blend of electric motor-driven performance and class-topping fuel efficiency.
Success from the start
Introduced as a powertrain option for the Nissan Note in November 2016, customers in Japan were quick to embrace the 100% electric motor-driven e-POWER for its EV-like performance and class-leading fuel efficiency, and helped made it the best-selling compact car in 2017 and the overall best-selling car in 2018 across Japan.
The innovative e-POWER technology also received a prestigious Japanese environmental award – the Chairman’s Prize – for its contributions to reducing CO² emissions by the Energy Conservation Center Japan (ECCJ) as part of the Energy Conservation Grand Prize Awards for 2017.
Nissan would also introduce an e-POWER variant in its segment-leading Serena MPV in 2018 that won the 2019 Technology of the Year award by the Automotive Researchers’ and Journalists’ Conference of Japan (RJC). The judges noted that Nissan created an electrified vehicle with excellent fuel efficiency by using existing core EV components and by taking full advantage of regenerative braking, the e-POWER system enabled one-pedal operation, easing driver workload and making driving more enjoyable.”

In Japan, the launch of the Kicks e-POWER in 2020 saw Nissan winning the 2021 Technology of the Year award by the Automotive Researchers’ and Journalists’ Conference of Japan (RJC) and the Kicks was also named as one of the ‘6 Best Cars of the Year’ by RJC.

The e-POWER system was noted for its powerful performance as well as its high level of quietness, while the Kicks e-POWER’s sporty design and exhilarating performance cemented it as one of the best cars of the year, as adjudged by esteemed automotive researchers and journalists in Japan.
Such was the popularity of e-POWER in Japan that the all-new successor of the Nissan Note would only be powered by e-POWER exclusively. The stylish yet sophisticated compact hatchback went on to win the coveted title of Japan Car of the Year 2021-2022; a decade after the Nissan LEAF took the honours in 2011 – a fitting tribute to the LEAF which provided the foundations of the e-POWER system. Among the winning attributes noted by the JCOTY judges were ‘extremely low noise level and excellent driving performance achieved by the 2nd generation e-POWER system.’

Expanding the e-POWER footprint
Buoyed by the success of e-POWER in Japan, Nissan introduced the Kicks e-POWER in Thailand in 2020 – the first e-POWER model to be launched outside of Japan. The trendy compact crossover with the unique 100% electric motor-driven system pioneered electrification in the ASEAN region and was subsequently launched in Indonesia and Singapore later in the year.
In 2022, the Kicks was updated with the second-generation e-POWER drive system for the Japan, Thailand and Singapore markets. The newly upgraded Kicks e-POWER also made its debut in Philippines and Vietnam, with Malaysia to follow soon.
Powered by the second-generation drive system, the upgraded Nissan Kicks e-POWER took home the Product Innovation Awards 2023 which was bestowed by Business+ Magazine in collaboration with the College of Management Mahidol University in Thailand.
Beyond the accolades
While awards recognise the technological achievements of e-POWER, the underlying reward is the joy experienced by drivers when they get behind the wheel of a Nissan e-POWER vehicle – where the exhilaration of an electric motor-powered drive is not diminished by range anxiety or the need to stop and charge, reassured by the knowledge that every drop of fuel is efficiently utilised.
As a testament to the growing appeal of e-POWER, the cumulative sales of Nissan models powered by e-POWER had already exceeded 1.2 million units globally. With more markets earmarked for e-POWER expansion, electrification without compromises is becoming a reality.

NISSAN e-POWER: THE ELECTRIFIED SOLUTION WITHOUT COMPROMISES

  • To achieve carbon neutrality via BEV and e-POWER twin-pillar strategy
  • Developed breakthrough technologies to achieve ‘EV-ness’ in e-POWER
  • Unique combination of EV performance with class-leading fuel efficiency

Kuala Lumpur, 28 August 2024 – When Nissan commenced its technical development strategy in 2005, one of the key objectives was to achieve carbon neutrality in the long term through a gradual adoption of battery electric vehicles (BEV) as well as electric motor-driven vehicles powered by energy sources such as hydrogen fuel cell, e-bio fuel cell and ICE-based power-generating systems.

Nissan eventually launched the world’s first mass-produced BEV in the all-electric LEAF in 2010 and to offer electric motor-driven e-POWER models as one of the twin pillars of its electrification strategy. As a new entrant competing in the crowded Japanese hybrid market in the mid-2010s, e-POWER promised superior fuel efficiency and EV-like driving characteristics which the Nissan Note e-POWER duly delivered in 2016, becoming no.1 best-seller in the Japanese domestic market.

Harnessing ‘EV-ness’ in e-POWER

Unlike conventional parallel hybrids which are predominantly powered by a petrol engine with limited electrical assistance, the wheels of an e-POWER vehicle are 100% driven by an electric motor. It utilises a combustion engine to power a generator which charge up its on-board Lithium-ion battery pack.

Nissan engineers adapted key components of the all-electric LEAF such as its inverter (the brains of an EV) and advanced control systems to harness the essence of electric drive – instant torque response and quiet, smooth performance – and applied them to e-POWER, giving it the characteristic ‘EV-ness’ which drivers appreciate.

Unlike similar forms of hybrids where noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) of the generator are typically not well isolated, an e-POWER’s internal combustion engine is calibrated to be discreet and only operates on a fixed-point basis where the engine is at its most efficient range to generate electricity. Additionally, the engine would come on in phases when the ambient noise is high (e.g. cruising at highway) so that the operation is masked acoustically.

Intelligent system operation and integration

When maximum performance is required, the engine in an e-POWER system is capable of supplying power directly to the motor while charging the battery at the same time to ensure sustained performance, this innovation by Nissan is unique to e-POWER and not found on traditional hybrid systems, furthermore, it negates the need for much larger high-capacity battery packs which adversely impacts weight and packaging.

Instead, a compact Lithium-ion battery with high power density and output was developed exclusively for e-POWER, the advantage of which is seen in the kerb weight of Nissan e-POWER models which are equivalent to ICE-powered models, but with superior weight distribution. As e-POWER is 100% motor-driven (via a gear reducer), a traditional transmission is not required and this not only reduces weight but also long-term maintenance costs.

e-POWER offers the best of both worlds

Against a backdrop dominated by BEVs, it’s easy to overlook Nissan’s e-POWER as another hybrid system centred around an internal combustion engine. Yet, e-POWER is the ideal step-up for car buyers who seeks the performance of a BEV and the fuel efficiency of a frugal hybrid.

The Nissan e-POWER drive system offers all the thrills and refinement of an EV through its 100% electric motor drive, but without the major drawback of range anxiety as it does not require external charging, which in turn eliminates the hassles associated with EV ownership, such as long charging time, lack of chargers and malfunctioning chargers

Innovations in engine and battery technologies, along with proprietary control systems and intelligent features such as e-Pedal Step energy regeneration gives e-POWER class-leading hybrid efficiency compared to ICE-powered vehicles. For many markets that are not ready to adopt BEVs en masse, e-POWER is the unique solution that comes without compromises.

About e-POWER

The e-POWER drive system is a technology unique to Nissan, it utilises a petrol engine to charge a Lithium-ion battery pack which then powers an electric motor to drive the wheels. It offers instant torque and responsive performance like an EV, but without range anxiety and without the need to plug in and charge. Compared to a traditional combustion engine, the e-POWER system has lower tailpipe emissions and running costs, it even utilises regenerative braking to reclaim energy and replenish the battery pack. Nissan plans to launch an all-new e-POWER model in Malaysia in Q4 2024.

Stay tune to discover more about the innovation behind e-POWER.

REMOVE EV HASSLES WITH NISSAN’S e‑POWER

  • Fully electric motor-driven, without the hassle of charging
  • Technology inspired by the original 100%-electric Nissan LEAF
  • Fine-tuned by engineers who also developed the R35 GT-R and LEAF

Kuala Lumpur, 9 August 2024 – As the first manufacturer in the world to mass produce EVs, Nissan possesses a wealth of expertise to develop and offer mobility solutions catering to diverse needs, and the innovative e-POWER drive system is the answer to an electrified powertrain without the limitations associated with EVs.

Inspired by the original LEAF

The first generation all-electric Nissan LEAF launched in 2010 pioneered cutting-edge engineering which laid the groundwork for today’s EVs. Innovations such as a lithium-ion battery pack with a laminated cell structure and large surfaces for cooling, and the incorporation of the battery pack onto the floor of the vehicle to optimise weight distribution and rigidity were game-changing.

Being the first of its kind to be sold across the globe, the all-electric Nissan LEAF bore a range of proprietary components – its inverter, power module, motor control system and DC/DC converter were all painstakingly developed in-house by Nissan. Yet when it comes to dependability and safety, the track record of Nissan EV models – with an accumulated global sales volume surpassing one million units – remains unblemished with no critical battery incidents thus far.

Developed by GT-R engineers

Driven by the spirit of innovation and harnessing the technologies perfected in the LEAF, Nissan introduced the e-POWER drive system in 2016 to Japanese consumers in the shape of the Nissan Note e-POWER, the motor-driven compact hatchback promptly became Japan’s No. 1 selling model, courtesy of its unique drivetrain, fun-to-drive factor and fuel efficiency.

Unlike conventional hybrid systems which are centred around the internal combustion engine being the main source of propulsion, e-POWER was founded on the building blocks of an EV where the wheels are turned solely by an electric motor receiving power from a lithium-ion battery pack. The presence of a small, ultra-efficient combustion engine in an e-POWER drive system serves as a generator to charge up the battery pack, hence there is never a need to plug in, eliminating the hassles associated with EV ownership.

To ensure that the e-POWER drive system went beyond technical excellence, Nissan called upon Naoki Nakada, a former chief engineer who worked on the powertrains of the R35 GT-R and the original LEAF, to harness the exhilarating attributes of a performance car with the pleasing torque-on-demand characteristics of an EV in the e-POWER drivetrain.

“e-POWER looks like a simple system that’s easy to develop. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. You have to get the balance right between electricity use and power generation, ensure the perfect timing for when the petrol engine operates and match the battery capacity to the type of car. A lot of development work went into perfecting the customer experience,” explains Nakada.

“We want to offer e-POWER to as many people as possible, as soon as possible. With e-POWER, we are giving them the full electric driving experience, which can in turn help accelerate toward a carbon neutral, electrified mobility world” added Nakada.

e-POWER going forward

As one of the key pillars of Nissan’s electrification strategy, the e-POWER drive system receives constant refinements to elevate driving pleasure and efficiency. While different specifications of combustion engines cater to different body styles of e-POWER models, efforts to commonise and modularised the key components between all-electric and e-POWER models are ongoing as both drivetrains share many commonalities.

Nissan’s Next-generation X-in-1 manufacturing concept paves the way for upcoming all-electric and e-POWER models to share an ‘X’ of number of components such as inverter, electric motor and reducer. By lowering the use of rare earth materials and size of the drivetrain, manufacturing costs can be reduced by up to 30% within 2026, compared to 2019. More importantly, price parity between e-POWER and ICE-powered models is within touching distance.

About e-POWER

The e-POWER drive system is a technology unique to Nissan, it utilises a petrol engine to charge a Lithium-ion battery pack which then powers an electric motor to drive the wheels. It offers instant torque and responsive performance like an EV, but without range anxiety and the need to plug in and charge. Compared to a traditional combustion engine, the e-POWER system has lower tailpipe emissions and running costs, it utilises regenerative braking to reclaim energy and replenish the battery pack. Nissan plans to launch an all-new e-POWER model in Malaysia in Q4 2024.

REDLINE FITNESS GAMES POWERED BY NISSAN: A SPECTACLE OF STRENGTH AND COMMUNITY

Kuala Lumpur,  17 July 2024 – Marking a triumphant return to the MINES International Exhibition and Convention Centre (MIECC) for the second consecutive year, the REDLINE Fitness Games Powered by NISSAN concluded on a high note this weekend. Held from 13 to 14 July 2024, this year’s event was built on the overwhelming response from its inaugural edition in 2023, attracting over 6,000 participants and spectators.

Supported by Rakan Muda, an initiative under the Ministry of Youth and Sports,  the partnership highlighted a shared commitment to fostering a culture of health, fitness, and community spirit across Malaysia. Rakan Muda’s involvement further enhanced the event’s visibility and appeal among young and active individuals throughout the region, contributing to the vibrant atmosphere and strong community engagement witnessed over the course of the two days.

The event also saw one lucky participant, Amanda Chen, as the new owner of a brand-new NISSAN Navara PRO-4X Pickup Truck. Returning as the title sponsor, NISSAN significantly contributed to the event’s success not only by sponsoring the lucky draw grand prize but also through substantial support that enhanced every aspect of the competition.

“More than just a competition, REDLINE Fitness Games Powered by NISSAN represents a commitment to fostering a strong, healthy, and engaged community. Central to the REDLINE concept is the idea of “redlining” – pushing oneself to the peak of physical and mental performance. This narrative not only drives the competition but also fosters a community spirit of resilience, personal achievement, and mutual support among participants.

To ensure inclusivity, the games featured a variety of categories to cater to different fitness levels: Singles Beginner, Singles Competitive, Singles Open, Doubles, and Team Relay. This diversity allowed participants from all walks of life to engage in the competition, from fitness novices to seasoned athletes, ensuring that every participant could find a challenge that suited their fitness journey.

In the competitive categories, the top performers were duly rewarded for their perseverance. In the Men’s Singles Competitive category, Marcus Funken secured first place, followed by Pierre Algret in second, and Nick Tisinger in third. As the event drew to a close, plans for next year’s edition are already in motion, promising an even bigger and better experience for all participants. REDLINE Fitness Games Powered by NISSAN will return for a third time in 2025, continuing its mission to promote fitness and foster community spirit among Malaysians.

NISSAN ALMERA 1.0L TURBO ACHIEVES AMAZING FUEL EFFICIENCY OF 28.61KM/L IN NISSAN LIGHTFOOT QUEST 2024

  • Contest to showcase the impressive fuel efficiency of the Nissan Almera 1.0L Turbo
  • Attracted 30 teams comprising Nissan Almera owners and members of media
  • Fuel efficiency evaluated over a distance of 203km from Petaling Jaya to Ipoh
  • Deserving winners took home prizes worth an accumulated RM10,500

KUALA LUMPUR, 22 June 2024 – An outstanding Nissan Almera 1.0L Turbo fuel efficiency of 28.61km/L was recorded by the winning participant at the Nissan Lightfoot Quest 2024. Muhammad Nifail Bin Basri of Kuala Lumpur managed this remarkable feat in a Nissan Almera Turbo after completing the 203km route which started at the Nissan 3S Flagship Store in Petaling Jaya, Selangor and ending at Ipoh, Perak, consumed merely seven (7) litres of petrol for the entire trip. Muhammad Nifail and his partner triumphed over 20 other Almera owners which also saw the second and third place finishers achieving impressive fuel consumption readings of 27.31km/L and 27.14km/L respectively.

In a separate category for members of the media comprising 9 teams, a commendable fuel efficiency of 28.20km/L was achieved by Gan Yong Li and Muhammad Sharil Bin Tarmize of Pandulaju.com.my, proving that the Nissan Almera Turbo can be efficient even in the hands of drivers who may not be as familiar with the car as the owners.

“We are proud to be holding the Nissan Lightfoot Quest once again, this time to showcase the exceptional fuel efficiency of the Nissan Almera 1.0L Turbo. Not only is the Almera Turbo stylish and fun to drive, its technologically-advanced turbocharged powertrain allows it to be responsive yet frugal in everyday use. With petrol prices expected to be adjusted upwards in the near future, the Nissan Almera Turbo is an even more compelling option in the B-sedan segment,” said Khoo Cheng Pah, Chief Executive Officer of Edaran Tan Chong Motor.

The Nissan Lightfoot Quest 2024 involved a total of 30 teams comprising 21 owners driving their own Almera Turbo and 9 members of the media in identical vehicles prepared by ETCM. The route covered a distance of 203km starting from the Nissan 3S Flagship Store in Petaling Jaya, Selangor and finishing at the Uniti Republic Café in Ipoh, Perak, with a pitstop at BHP Bandar Seri Botani, Ipoh where the fuel efficiency of each participating vehicle was tabulated and verified.

To ensure a level playing field and fuel efficiency levels that can be replicated in real-world conditions, every participating Almera Turbo were required to be in their original, unmodified condition conforming to factory specifications and manufactured between the year of 2020 and 2024. Additionally, participating vehicles had to retain their original seats, door cards and spare wheel in the boot while drivers were also required to be accompanied by a passenger 18 years of age and above.

Aside from adhering to the stipulated route, the challenge had to be completed within three hours with each vehicle’s fuel lid secured with tamper-proof stickers which were inspected before the journey’s fuel efficiency was calculated (based on the three-click method) at the petrol pumps of BHPetrol Station at Bandar Seri Botani, Ipoh.

“I would like to thank all the participants of the Nissan Lightfoot Quest 2024, particularly the passionate Nissan Almera owners and members of the media for pushing their vehicles and challenging themselves to unlock commendable levels of fuel efficiency in the Nissan Almera Turbo. I would like to extend my sincerest thanks and appreciation to BHPetrol on their invaluable sponsorship of this exciting and fun event. The winning entry of 28.61km/L is remarkable as this is much higher than the official fuel efficiency figures of the Nissan Almera Turbo at 18.4km/L. Congratulations to all the winners!” enthused Khoo.
